Workstation Player 12 (and earslier versions) shus down when guest OS is suspended or powered off

Hi,

I've noticed this for some time now and am just getting around the forum to ask about it.

Whenever I suspend of shut down a guest OS, the Workstation Player also shuts down and must be restarted.

I would like to leave it running in case I want to start up a different OS or even the same one in case I was shutting it down to do a fresh cold start for some reason.

How to get shared folders working on win7 host and ubuntu 14.04 LTS guest?

Hello,

I want to make use of shared folders.

My host system is windows 7. I have installed the current workstation player 12 there.

My guest shall be Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I downloaded latest ISO from Ubuntu website (Desktop edition).

I am able to install Ubuntu and to use it basicallly.

Also clipboard is working great.

But I am not able to get shared folders working,

The workstation player is installing the guest ubuntu via easy install. It shows it were installing open vm ware tools.

When trying to overinstall vmware tools via VM-> install vmware tools (which mounts a dvd) it tells me that open vm ware tools were installed and vm ware is not going to remove or install anything.

When checking google for support, I only find sites which describe the use of original vm ware tools installed from disc.

But vmWare recommends to use open vm ware tools.

Other sides handling this mostly are not referring windows as host system.

I still asked on an ubuntu forum there they told me it were a windows problem, I dont know.

Thats why I now ask here.

What instructions should I follow to get shared folders from "Windows 7" host to "Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop" guest working

with VMWare Worksation PLayer 12 which uses easy install and installs open vm ware tools.

Thanks in advance.

Exiting a VMware Workstation console while running WinPE from pxe and cannot get back in

I am running Windows 7 SP1 Pro 64 bit with 32GB of ram. 3.8GHz quad core AMD A10-5800B.

VMWare Workstation 11.1.0 Build 2496824

I am testing deploying machines from SCCM. During this process is downloads a Windows PE image and goes through the installation process. If I release the mouse from the console with CTRL-Alt or if I move the mouse out of the window, I cannot access the console again. This seems to be on all VMWare Workstation no matter the configuration. But the one I am working with at the moment is:

1 Proc 1 Core

Virtualization engine is Automatic. I have check Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI and Virtualize CPU performance counter. Both of there were not checked before this and I still have the issue with both settings.

8GB ram

100GB HDD as SCSI 0:0

Not sure what else I should include. I read something about Display Fusion causing issues but with DF off or with Force Processor Affinity (all CPUs) enabled or disabled.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Charles

Need to use a specified address range in Player 7

I use Player7 to VPN into a network.  It mostly works well, but some functionality (e.g., auto-launching java applets) requires "split tunneling" which is only possible on this network if my Player7's IP addresses are in the range of 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.9.0/24.  The default network segment for my VMnet8 is 192.168.19.0/24.  The host OS is Win10pro.  The guest OS is Win7 Ultimate.

  • I have tried specifying static addressing on VMnet8 adapter in the host OS, but it didn't change the default network segment.
  • I also tried specifying static addressing on the Local Area Connection in the guest OS, but this didn't work either . . . though I don't remember exactly how it didn't work at this point.
  • Additionally, I tried setting the adapter to bridge mode (Player > Manage > Virtual Machine Settings > Hardware > Network Adapter), but this resulted in my not being able to connect to my local network (disconnected), let alone VPN into the remote network.
    • It has an option to Configure Adapters, but that option only displays a selection box with nothing to select which does not seem useful.
  • I even tried editing C:\ProgramData\VMware\vmnetnat.conf, vmnetdhcp.conf& vmnetdhcp.leases by replacing 192.168.19.xxx with 192.168.3.xxx, but that didn't change the default network segment either.
  • I tried so many things that Player7 stopped connecting to the network and and had to uninstall and reinstall it to get it working again.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Western Digital: WD-MyBook 4TB Cannot Run Virtual Machine in F Drive

Folks,

Hello. I am using VMPlayer 3. Host machine is Windows 7 and Guest Virtual machine is Oracle Linux 5.

My F drive external device is Western Digital: WD-MyBook 4TB whose Model WDBFJK0040 HBK-NESN  SKU 1766068.

This device is basically a backup disk in F Drive.

Because Host machine hard disk space is not enough any more, I copied the Virtual Machine Oracle Linux 5 from Host machine Windows 7 C Drive to F Drive. Then I run  Oracle Linux 5 from the external device.

First time,  I boot  F Drive VM Oracle Linux 5 operating system successfully while the OS  cannot search files, Oracle Database Listener is not working.

Second time, F Drive Operating System Oracle Linux 5 cannot boot any more.

A year ago, I copied Virtual Machine Windows Server 2003 from Host machine Windows 7 to another Western Digital 500GB F Drive. I run F Drive VM Windows Server 2003 correctly.

It seems that not all Operating Systems can be run from F Drive.

My question is:

Does the device "Western Digital: WD-MyBook 4TB  Model WDBFJK0040 HBK-NESN" run Virtual Machine correctly ?

Thanks in advance.

Catch 22 trying to install VMware Tools

$

I created a Windows 7 VM from a physical PC. I "play" it on a Windows 10 host via VMware Workstation 12 Player, log in to the guest, and then click the "Install Tools" button in Player. I see this error message:

"The virtual machine needs to have a virtual CD/DVD device to install VMware Tools."

Okay, so I shut down the guest which also terminates the Player, run Player again, select the VM, and click "Edit virtual machine settings." On the Hardware tab, I click the Add button, select "CD/DVD Drive," click Next, select the "Use ISO image" radio button (because I assume that's what the error message means by "virtual CD/DVD"), and click Next, Then I'm prompted for an ISO image. And that's the Catch 22--the error message indicates that Player just needs a virtual device, not an ISO, but when I attempt to add a virtual device, Player wants an ISO.

How can I break this cycle and install VMware Tools?

Cannot get rid of Hint box when starting VM with VMWare-kvm

Re: VMWare Workstation Player 12.1  When I start a virtual machine using VMWare-KVM I am continually presented with the 'Press pause to switch among virtual machines and the host - do not show hint again' message box. I have tried ticking 'do not show hint again' but this has no effect. I have tried deselecting from VMWare-KVM --preferences. Again no effect. I imagine there is a line I can add to ...\roaming\VMWare\preferences.ini that will disable this. Does anybody know what the format for this would be?

Windows 10 Insider Preview build updates break host shared folders

$

Using VMWare Player 7.1.3 build-3206955

Host: Windows 7 Home Premuim

Guest: Windows 10 Insider Preview

Each time W10 Insider Preview is updated to the latest build, host shared folders are no longer accessible. The shared folder settings are preserved but shared folder not visible after updates.

Is this a bug or expected behaviour?

I have found a solution but it's time consuming:-

Completely uninstall VMWare Tools (Modify or Repair options don't work).

Restart Windows 10.

Re-install VMWare Tools.

Restart Windows 10.

Original shared folder settings now work as expected.

My life as a VMWare Player user without admin rights

Hello everyone,

First, let me be cheerful with you VMWare for adding more and more features into the free version VMWare Workstation Player (formerly Player) ;

Then, let me report some annoying and ridiculous bug, as well as improvement ideas for Player 12 when, like me, you don't have local admin rights on your professional workstation:

* Device modification: from the UI you need admin rights to add a device...but you can actually add one directly in the vmx file...

* UI: please, bring the "View > Fit Guest Now, and Fit Window Now" from Workstation to Player. I always have to manuall minimize then maximize the window to have non-full-screen fitted view...

Thank you for reading my complaint and willing to fix in the next version.

More bugs to be reported soon

Display Guest notification area (tray) in Host Windows 10 - Workstation Player 12 Unity

$

Hi all,

I can't for the life of me figure out if I'm blind or if this just isn't built into Workstation Player 12.

In my guest OS (Windows 10 x86) I have an exe that is minimized to the tray. When I go into Unity mode I am unable to see the program in the tray of the host OS (Windows 10 x64). If I then exit Unity and view the guest OS in a window, the program is visible in the tray. Is it possible to show the guest OS tray in the host while in Unity mode?

I know this is possible using Parallels on a Mac but as I am new the VMWare and only trailing at the moment I was hoping it is something that is achievable.

Many thanks all!

Intel HD Arrandale, DirectX 10, OpenGL 2.1 - 3D acceleration works on Windows host but not on Linux host

$

I have an integrated Intel Arrandale HD Graphics card:

ModelProcessor architectureRelease datePCI IDExecution units
HD GraphicsArrandale20108086:00466

DirectX 10

OpenGL 2.1

With this card on Windows host 3D acceleration in Windows guest works fine in VMware:

- Player 7

- Workstation Player 12 when using this fix Re: Workstation 12 Pro: No 3D support is available from the host. The 3D features of the virtual machine will be disabled.

On Linux host 3D acceleration in Windows guest doesn't work neither in Player 7 nor in Workstation Player 12.

I already tried:

- different Linux distros

- ensured that 3D acceleration works in Linux itself

- installed libtxc-dxtn-s2tc-bin and libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 packages

- tried to enable "ST3 Texture compression even if software support is not available" via driconf

- added mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = "TRUE"

- tried virtualhw.version = "10", 11 and 12

So questions are:

1. Is there a magic setting to make VMware work for my card? I don't need DirectX 10, mostly 8 and 9.

2. I make a suspicion that it works on Windows host because it uses not yet EOL DirectX 10 API there and doesn't work on Linux as it uses probably EOL OpenGL 2.1 API there.

So what is the requirement for OpenGL version that card must support?

3. What VMWare products of which versions will work for my card?

Thanks!

USB 2.0/3.0 Controller Mismatch between Host and Guest causes occasional data corruption on Windows 8+

Solution:

Properly configuring your Virtual Controller of your guest VM likely the most successful way to prevent this issues.

Symptoms:

While testing DMA functionality of one of our USB devices our test was failing due to incorrect data (data corruption) being received. We looked into the failure further and discovered one method of causing this was by leaving the default usb virtual controller default configuration of 3.0 when only usb 2.0 was supported or vice versa. This only affects Windows 8 and 10, Windows 7 was not affected so maybe this is an Microsoft problem.

Summary:

The Help does not mention that this step is required but merely saying if select xHCI then everything works. VMware support stated that configuring as a 2.0 or 3.0 explicitly was the expect way to do it. We have logs from both sides of the vm that the corruption is occurring in the virtual USB controller and no an issue with our driver or our device.  Most of the time the 3.0 controller worked fine for other transfer mechanisms but for our DMA transfers we typically saw corruption very quickly.

During one case a expected value was 39 and we received x27 after the virtual controller. Notice status is showing everything is ok.

USB Monitor log (inside VM)

Request:

Can someone document or give me a ticket # stating that this is an issue and I'll document it for my customer? I want to defer these VM configuration questions your way to help ensure the end customers get the correct information.

VMware Player 7.1.2 build-2780323 running on Ubuntu 14.04 3.13.0-79-generic

I'm having a Devil of a time with Solaris.  The Live ISO would boot to a GUI, and the pointer was there and moving around with the mouse, but any click would just drop down Applications, I think it was.  The text installer just froze.  I can start gparted by tabbing and arrowing around, and it sees a single 290.24MB disk.

Any tricks to making this work?

I have the original Windows 98 cd disk pack with product keys. After receiving the above message with the disks I downloaded an ISO image file of Windows 98 and still get the same message when trying to create a virtual machine.  I have searched the forums and found someone had the same message trying to install Windows 98 on an earlier version of workstation.  But the reply they received was to use the original floopy disks but as I have the cds I'm stuck as to why I'm having this problem. I have workstation installed on my SSD and hoped to install virtual machines  on HDD storage.  But have tried to install on SSD and still get the same message.  As this is server message should I be receiving it at all?  Can someone please assist?

I have tried it with Win7-32Bit and Win7-64Bit.

The host ist an Win 10 System with a I7-6700 and a Mainboard Gigabyte GA-B150-HD3P and it es a privat environment.

For both VM-machines I have saved the folder with the Log-files.

Maybe there is a solution for this problem.

Not able to associate guest to a VLAN

$

Hello,

I'm using VMWare workstation player 12 in linux (LXLE distribution, based on ubuntu), with a guest OS based on windows XP. This setup is working fine whenever I configure it with "bridged" or "NAT". Strangely, I don't have the option "custom" in my network settings, so I cannot test it.

Now, for security concerns, I'd like the guest would connect to different network of the host.

For that purpose, I created a VLAN and configured everything so that the host is receiving both VLAN tagged (via a virtual eth0.2 NIC) and "normal" untagged traffic (via the physical eth0 NIC). I also created a virtual bridge (bridge-utils package - brctl commands) where I associated the eth0.2 NIC.

In other words:

eth0 (physical) --> receives "normal" lan packets, gets its IP via the DHCP server from the 192.168.2.x network. This is my home LAN, which I want to keep secured, and therefore don't want the guest to access.

eth0.2 (virtual, based on the physical eth0) --> receives and decodes VLAN2 tagged packets, gets its IP via the DHCP server from the 192.168.1.x network. This is an external LAN, which I don't mind if its secured or not and where I'd like the guest to connect.

br0 --> virtual bridge witch has the eth0.2 card. I believe id need to add to it some sort of "vmnet" card in order to establish communication to the external LAN.

I'd believe what I'm missing here is to somehow add a vmnet NIC to the bridge, but unfortunately I don't have a vmnet0 NIC neither the option "custom" in the VMWare network settings.

Other alternative would be, maybe, to associate the bridge option (in VMWare player network settings) to eth0.2 instead of eth0, but either way, I'm not being able to get it sorted.

My ifconfig -a only reports:

- br0 (bridge)

- eth0 (physical NIC)

- eth0.2 (virtual NIC associated to the VLAN)

- vmnet1 (which I believe is NAT)

- vmnet8 (which I believe is Host-to-host)

Any idea/suggestion on how can I close this gap? I feel I'm so close and yet so far....

Thanks,

Joao
