I have a CanoScan D660U scanner that works well under XP; but the fine folks at Canon have not seen fit to support it under Windows 8.1. So I thought that, since I have on my Windows 8.1 host machine a virtual machine running Windows XP Pro, maybe I could make it work there. And it does! There is a minor problem in that XP does not see the device unless I plug it in when input is being directed to the guest machine. Logically, this is a bit silly, since Windows 8.1 does not even have a driver for it (and it knows it). It seems like there ought to be a way to make the system always defer to the XP guest for the purpose of operating the scanner. I tried disabling the device in the Windows 8.1 Device Manager; but that did not help. Is there a way that works? Otherwise, I have to unplug and replug it each time I want to use it, as I don't have the guest running most of the time.
