Workstation 12 Player 12.1.0 and Xfce 4.12.2

I have installed Workstation Player in a few other versions of Mint and it has worked fine but using xfce I find that although the main program

with the list of appliances does load, when I go to actually power on the VM that it just closes the window.

There are lots of errors in the log and it's probably something stupid like one of the missing config files but I am not sure where to start looking.
